Executive presence is a buzzy phrase that’s often thrown around in corporate culture, but as an ambitious millennial woman, you may be wondering how exactly it relates to your career. Executive presence is more than just being the largest presence in the room — in fact, it’s something anyone can have. Individuals with good executive presence know how to lead others effectively and make exciting new ideas a reality. Developing your executive presence is essential for not only winning others over at work, but also finding your purpose in your industry. Here are five ways you can leverage your executive privilege to succeed at work:


1. Fake confidence until you make it

It’s OK if you don’t feel confident right now — it’s normal to have some insecurities as you’re working your way up in your career. However, conveying those insecurities to others could hold you back. One way that we often communicate our insecurities unintentionally is through our body language. Practice sitting or standing up straight and making eye contact, as it will automatically make you seem more confident. Feeling nervous? Take deep breaths to stay calm. A relaxed yet confident presence will immediately draw others to you at work.


2. Be concise to captivate

You might think that going into detail about your ideas is the best way to get your point across. However, the person who goes on and on in a meeting is someone that others might tune out. To get others to listen to what you have to say, focus on communicating concisely. Don’t feel like you have to constantly jump into the conversation, but instead really think through your ideas so you can share them effectively.


3. Wear what makes you feel confident

When you feel great about the way you look, your executive presence will naturally shine through. Even if you work in a conservative environment, look for ways that you can add a small touch of personality to your look. Maybe it’s wearing your favorite earrings or a jacket that really flatters your figure. Don’t feel like you have to look like everyone else. When you embrace your individuality, your unique talents will shine through.


4. Know what makes you great

In order to be successful, you have to be self-aware. When many people think about self-awareness, they only focus on their flaws. However, being aware of your positive attributes is just as important. Spend some time identifying what you are good at and where you are most knowledgeable. Then, bring that confidence to work with you, and really put your energy into those areas.


5. Make others feel great

One of the best ways to command respect from your coworkers is to respect them and make them feel good. When other people are talking, listen intently and respond thoughtfully. Go out of your way to show others that you care. A good leader is strong, but she’s also someone that other people genuinely want to be around. Cultivating great relationships with others will continue to benefit you as your career advances.
